Several months ago, I stumbled upon information about a recipe contest sponsored by the Pennsylvania Vegetable Marketing & Research Program. In order to stockpile some yummy recipes and celebrate PA Produce Month, the agency was calling for entries for the 2013 contest. Apparently they have been doing this for years, where have I been? Veggies? Cooking? It seemed right up my alley, so I entered my Cabbage and Shrimp with Peanut Sauce recipe. Imagine my surprise when I was chosen as a finalist and invited to the 2013 Cook-Off!! I arrived at the Cook-off about an hour before the judging to make sure I had plenty of time to make my dish. The first order of business when I arrived was getting acquainted with the kitchen- we were at the Lebanon County Career & Technology Center. The second order of business was tasting the other contest entries! My veggie category (cabbage/broccoli/cauliflower) was last on the judging schedule, so I immediately got to sample the dishes from the other veggie categories. My mom (and photographer!) and I liked a lot of the dishes we tried, I'll have to make some of them at home. Before too long it was time to get cooking. I was a little out of my element because I have always cooked on an electric stove, and the stove at the culinary school was gas. It took me a few minutes to make sure my cooking temperature was right. Now I'm getting the hang of it! I felt so fancy cooking in a restaurant-style kitchen. I could get used to this. Once I cooked my veggies & rice, all I had left to do was make my peanut sauce. So easy. May I present: Cabbage and Shrimp with Easy Thai Peanut Sauce! And the winner is: Not Me. Waa. But I still had a blast cooking and tasting the other recipes. This was my first live cooking contest, and I was happy to be chosen as a finalist. Has anyone else ever cooked for judges?
