I have been getting a lot of questions about tofu lately. Believe me- I haven't always eaten tofu: it sounded weird, I didn't know how to cook it, I would rather eat something else, and so on. Once I started really eliminating meat from my diet, I knew that I needed to try some new sources of protein. Learning to prepare tofu took some experimenting- so I wanted to share my tofu method for those of you who want to try tofu but don't know what to do. If you follow this tofu tutorial, you will end up with a protein alternative that is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Here is my step by step guide:
Step One: Buy your tofu- this is what the package looks like. I like both firm and extra firm. Newbies may want to start with extra firm.
Step Two: Press the tofu. I do this by putting the block of tofu in between two plates. Let it sit for about 20-30 minutes. While my tofu is pressing, I use the time to do other prep work like chopping veggies.
Step Three: Drain the tofu. You can see here the liquid that accumulated during the 20 minutes of pressing.
Step Four: Cut the tofu into pieces. I typically cut it in half horizontally, then make my vertical cuts 4x4 so it yields 32 pieces. If you are going to marinate your tofu, steps 1-4 can be done the night before & then the pieces can be soaked in your marinade. If you're not marinating, move directly on to cooking.
Step Five: Pour some olive oil in a skillet, then place your tofu pieces in the skillet.
Step Six: If you haven't marinated your tofu, season with your favorite spice blend. I am using McCormick Steakhouse Onion Burger here.
Step Seven: Start flipping your tofu so it browns on all sides. You can see how the top pieces in this picture are nice & golden brown- that side is done! Continue to flip every few minutes until each side is golden. You do have to hover over the stove for a bit while you're doing this, but taking the time to cook the tofu on each side is what makes it yummy.
Step Eight- Eat! Your tofu is done and ready to be added to your favorite dishes.
